This Privacy Policy explains what information the Umbrella app ("Umbrella", "we", "us") collects, how it's used, and the choices you have. We built Umbrella to be useful while collecting as little about you as possible.
Who we are
Umbrella is provided by Umbrella Weather Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. For any privacy question, contact us at privacy@umbrellaweather.com.
The short version
- We use your location to fetch a local forecast, then discard it. We don't keep a history of where you've been.
- Your preferences, saved places, commute details, and any people or health sensitivities you add are stored on your device, not on our servers.
- Payments for Umbrella+ are processed by Apple. We never see your card details.
- We don't sell your data, and we don't use it for advertising.
Information we process
Location
With your permission, Umbrella uses your device's location to show weather for where you are and to power features like commute timing and leave-home alerts. Your coordinates are sent to our weather data providers to retrieve forecasts and are not stored by us afterwards or linked to your identity. You can use Umbrella without location access — it will use a home location you set instead — and you can change or revoke permission at any time in Settings.
Leave-home alerts and background location. If you enable departure alerts, Umbrella sets up a small geofence around your home so your device can notify the app when you leave. This monitoring happens on your device through Apple's location services; Umbrella does not record or transmit a log of your comings and goings. "Always" location permission enables these background alerts; with "While Using," the app still works and these alerts are simply less precise or unavailable.
Places you save, commutes and destinations
Your home location, saved places, commute schedules, and any commute destinations you enter (like your workplace) are stored locally on your device so the app can show weather for them. Destination coordinates are used to fetch weather for that place. We don't receive a copy of this information.
People you care for
If you add people you care about and the place they're in, that information is stored on your device and used only to show weather relevant to them. Umbrella does not track those people's devices — it only uses the place you type in.
Health sensitivities
If you opt in to health-related alerts (for example pollen, air quality, heat, cold, or pressure sensitivity), your selections are stored on your device and used only to decide which weather notifications to show you. These selections are never transmitted to us. Umbrella's health-related alerts are informational only and are not medical advice.
Purchases and subscriptions
Umbrella+ purchases and subscriptions are processed by Apple through your Apple ID. We never receive your payment details. To unlock features you've paid for, the app verifies your subscription status on your device.
We use RevenueCat, a subscription-management service, to process purchase information. RevenueCat receives an anonymous identifier and details of your purchase (such as which plan is active and when it renews) so the app can reliably unlock Umbrella+ across your devices. RevenueCat does not receive your name, email, location, or health information. You can read RevenueCat's privacy policy here.
Calendar (optional)
If you enable calendar integration, Umbrella reads upcoming events from your device's calendar to time weather advice around them (for example, rain before an outdoor appointment). This happens on your device — your event details are never transmitted to us. You can revoke calendar access at any time in Settings.
Your profile and routine
Details you optionally add — such as temperature preferences, gear, birthdays, anniversaries, or activities — are stored on your device to tailor the advice Umbrella gives. They stay on your device.
Notifications
If you enable notifications, your device's operating system handles their delivery. Umbrella schedules notifications based on weather and the preferences described above.
Diagnostics
We may receive basic, non-identifying crash and performance information through Apple's standard developer tools if you have device-level sharing enabled. You can control this in your device's privacy settings.
Weather data providers
Apple WeatherKit provides Umbrella's forecasts, minute-by-minute precipitation, and official severe weather alerts. Your location may be sent to Apple to return a forecast, subject to Apple's Privacy Policy. Weather data is attributed to Weather and its sources within the app.
Open-Meteo provides air quality and pollen data. Your coordinates are sent to Open-Meteo to return local air-quality readings; no identifying information accompanies them.
What we don't do
- We don't sell or rent your personal information.
- We don't use your data to serve advertising.
- We don't build a profile of your movements or keep a location history.
Data retention
Information stored on your device remains until you delete it or remove the app. Location sent to retrieve a forecast is used for that request and not retained by us. Purchase records are retained by Apple (and RevenueCat, as described above) per their policies. If you email us, we keep that correspondence only as long as needed to help you, and will delete it on request.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data, or to object to certain processing. Because most of your information is stored only on your device, you can exercise much of this directly by editing or deleting it in the app, or by removing the app. For anything held by us (such as email correspondence), contact privacy@umbrellaweather.com and we'll respond as required by applicable law.
Children
Umbrella is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country), and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. We'll revise the "last updated" date above, and significant changes will be reflected here.
